Study Your Competition

Once you figure out what it takes to get to the first page you can make a plan to get there. I am doing a series of videos on how to study your competition (seo wise) for my upcoming Home Study course.

This first part is using the tool spydermate.com which gives each site a ranking score based on backlinks, page rank, alexa, compete, age and domain expiration. Now we know there are many more factors in ranking a page, but this gives us barometer to measure by.

Sypdermate.com also creates a really cool graph to easily see where improvement can be made. In this video, I take two keywords, a monster one, “Weight Loss” and a less competitive niche keyword, “Organic  Olive Oil” that I am actually interested in. 🙂

I then analyzed the sites on page one and then a couple on page 3 and put them all in a spreadsheet to take a quick snapshot of the competition. Enjoy!

The next part in this series will study the back links of these sites to get a better understanding of why they are rank where they do and what we would need to do to get there.

  1. I would love to see this, but for the life of me I cannot view it. I have the plugin, heck I have Camtasia 6 which has this anyway… It just sits there and seems like it loads forever and does not play.

Hope something can be done, or maybe a suggestion of something I could do to view this.

  2. Awesome presentation! Great demos and bullet points. Excellent tips re: spydermate.com and good overview of its features. This tool is a great place to start to see aggregated statistics and begin an SEO analysis. The chart/graph feature is a great visual aide and the suggestion to think of it as a “barometer” to measure your competitors is very helpful. Compiling the results in an Excel spreadsheet is also a great tip. Thanks!

  3. Excellent presentation with all features and I have completley gone to the roof after having watched the video presentaion. Really sockdolager reviews on SEO.

  4. hey thanks for the cool tips on page ranking. I guess it would be a great idea if you mention about “word stuffing” being used by the sites to enhance their page rank!!

  5. I must say that the presentation was very good. All points were explained excellently. The tips given on page ranking are really great.

  6. This is great! I am always trying to improve my SEO, especially considering that I do a lot of online writing. I will try Sypdermate.com sometime, for sure. I will definitely come back to this website!

  7. Hello Dori,

I have a question or two about SeoNitro which I’m hoping you can answer. I’m very interested in purchasing a membership package, but have found that SeoNitro is the Registrant for many, many of the domains where my links would appear.

As you teach, it is better to have multiple Registrants for a network.

This seems like a fairly easy thing for Google to sniff out and kill all link juice from the network. I saw this happen with Search Engine Trust, Backlink Solutions, and others, although not due to a Registrant issue (to my knowledge).

Is there any worry that the websites in your network will stop passing link juice? I saw a video where you said (it was actually a pop-up graphic) some of your network sites have been deindexed, were these SeoNitro sites?

As mentioned in the beginning of this comment, I would love to join SeoNitro but this one possible issue has me sitting on the fence.

    Many thanks,

  8. this article came just in time. i`m opening an online shop and i really needed some advices. 🙂 Very useful tips. thank you very much.

  9. Hey thanks for the cool instruction on page ranking. I guess it would be a great idea if you mention about “word stuffing” being used by the sites to enhance their page rank!!

  10. Great presentation, and very informative!

I agree that analysing your competition is a MUST yet so many marketers ignore this fact, and continue blindfolded, then get stung because they target something way too competative!

Personally, I like to analyse the following:
    -Pagerank
    -Backlinks
    -Meta Tags
    -Age of sites

I find those 4 things can give a pretty good understanding of how competative the target keyword/phrase is going to be, and help determine whether it is worth any further effort.

  11. This tips have been very useful to me.It has a great points to be taken in daily life.thanks for giving such a nice tips.

  12. Studying competition can give you the necessary “thing” to come close and/or win. I find yahoo site explorer useful. You can just type link:www.competition-site.com and site explorer will show backlinks to that site.

It is great as you can find what methods is competition using, and if you want you can take the fight with them at the area where it counts. I’ve found many free niche focused directories this way. And

  13. ya I like it and now I have got some idea and figured out how to progress with what I have .. Itz nice to watch this video it was very useful for me, and it will also be helpful to all who watch this.

  14. Really wonderful presentation you had. This is the best tool for aggregating statistics and SEO analysis.

Features of Graphs and Chartts are very helpful to compete the market.

  15. For me one of the most helpful things is having some sort of benchmark when looking at spydermate etc. in other words what number is good for page rank what is a good number of back links or some kind of gauge to reference from.

  16. Dori,

You are a SEO Goddess! Thanks again for the great instruction.

If you don’t mind, would you offer up some of the sites, blogs and people you follow on a regular basis that help you stay current and further your SEO knowledge base?
