Earning from a website is more than just one thing. Its a sum of parts. Pagerank is pointless measurement in website ranking. Its a measurement of inbound linking status thats just one part of the algorithm. What if you have a poor product or poor web design navigation, the whole ranking position then is not proving its worth. This is a great article that hit it on the head. People must realize that CONTENT is basically good for putting your Affiliate or Domain link in the resource box at the end . This does derive some income but it takes many articles.
LINKS is the game. There are some good software programs out there but you need to not overdue it with too many at one time lest Google could ban you. I teach also that linking is KING.

Until Google have humans actually reading all site content they will relay on links to rank sites. But at present, once people find your site, you still need decent content to keep them long enough for them to maybe click on the links on your site (bounce rate).

I must say that it is very dissapointing, the lengths people will go to just to advertise their business. I have seen many sites where people are paid to click on certain ads or webpages, and even double or triple posted links on search engines. The ranking system is completely and utterly unfair for those who try to do things the ethical and honest way.

This is a good honest report. It is true that Google ranking is based only on links. This is the reason some people even pay you if you click their web site via Google.
