One project that I have wanted to do for a long time is to create a SEO tool bar. You know, kind-of like the Google tool bar we all install but one centered around what an SEOer would want on it.

So, that is where you come in.

If you could customize a tool bar for SEO, what kind of things would you want on it?

Even if it is crazy, tell me below!

Ok, yesterday’s comments were filled with questions on Ryan Deiss’s new report called “The Perpetual Traffic Report” where he discusses Google’s recent Caffeine Update and the increase of “Activity” as a ranking factor.

— time out—
(My original post was on another report on The truth about Page Rank and you can go see comments and report here: http://www.dorifriend.com/the-truth-about-page-rank-2/ )
—

As I agree with Ryan on almost everything he said, especially about the fact that we give Google TOO MUCH CREDIT and that SEO is actually very simple and more cost effective then a PPC campaign. (I even did a short video report on THAT over two years ago called SEO vs. PPC! that looks a bit like his recent research lol :-P )

But, I am on pause over this “Activity” thing.

I do agree that it would be an ideal trigger for Google to account for. BUT, unless a site is on page 1 of a major search engine or is getting “direct” traffic from members or others who know to type in the URL, or ah hem, clicking on a LINK somewhere lol, then activity may be hard to measure and achieve for a very well written piece of informative content that users may just LOVE if they new about it. And that is why I think Google has to CONTINUE to place more emphasis on the link vote!

But still, I think this idea of the “Caffeine” update has merit, but I for one, mostly change my seo methods from the results of my “experience” or regarded “test” results, not what Google tell’s me they are doing or how it is going to work. I would be chasing my tail if I did THAT!! lol =:0

What do you think of the report, the “Caffeine” update and this “Activity” thing?

Oh, and what do you suppose Ryan is going to sell us at the end of it?

I didn’t write this but it is worth passing.

No hype, no bullshit, just a very well written report on the findings of a study they did on Page Rank.

I was actually floored because for ONE, I don’t ever see other people testing things and if they do, they tend not to share the results, and TWO, that I agree with everything they reported and have been spounting it for years.

I even yelled at the audiance when I spoke at Yaniks Underground that the biggest myth in seo was that “Content was King” cause it ain’t! And of course everyone looked at me like I had 5 heads. lol

Well, without getting into all the details of the report, which I hope you download and read, here are the bullets to the myth breaking findings.

Google doesn’t care about the “freshness” of your content.

Google doesn’t care about the “quality” of your content.

Google doesn’t care if you change the contents of a page

Google doesn’t care about duplicate content

Google doesn’t care if you change registrars or owners of a domain

Google doesn’t care if you change hosting providers and / or servers

What does Google care about, and what is KING in the SEO world is… links, and ONLY links.

Now with that being said. I want you to note that this report is on Page Rank, and not SE rankings. For ranking, I do believe in the “freshness” of LINKs and lot’s of them.

Click the report to download and read. It is short and to the point. Let me know what you think. And thanks to Internet Marketing Blueprint for the report, you just made a new fan!

Ok, Part 2 of the SEO Linking Interview continues. Here are the rest of the questions with my answers.. If you missed Part 1 and or would like to get in the conversation over there, here is that link http://www.dorifriend.com/seo-linking-interview/.

(4) If you could choose a link on a lower authority page that would provide a moderate amount of targeted traffic or a link on a higher authority page that would provide absolutely no traffic – all other attributes being equal – for ranking benefits on the site you’re developing links for, which would you choose and why?

Dori answer: If the goal is to rank, I would absolutely choose a link on a higher authority page. It is authority that RANKS the site it links too, not traffic.

(5) Do you feel that you can conserve pagerank or that it’s still worth the effort to sculpt your links, by limiting the number of links on a page, creating them with JavaScript, passing them through a blocked page or using nofollow?

Dori answer: I don’t believe it is as affective as in years past, but I still do it, I still link to inner pages to let PR stream through. Just makes for a better rounded natual site.

(6) Please discuss what link deprecation is and what impact it may have on a link building campaign.

Dori answer: In my world, it is a couple of things.

a. link rolls off the front page of the blog, or
b. link comes from site that loses authority or get’s deindexed, or
c. link is removed from site

It is my experience that the first two do not have much affect on my rankings (believe it or not, I know, strange) so the impact it has comes from my clients who count links instead of rankings.

But, I do believe in defending rankings which in mid-range keywords it takes a continuous flow of new links coming in. But for long tail, old tired links still get the job done.

(7) Do you think search engines are trying to find a way to depend less on link popularity and more on other algorithmic/social media factors?

Dori’s answer: I did here that Face Book is creating a search engine based on users clicking the “like” link, but I think, if we were going to see an algorithmic change based on social media factors, I think we would already of seen it. And I could be totally wrong.

(8) How much do you stress internal linking on your own or clients’ sites? Do you have a quick rule of thumb or strategy to maximize the effectiveness of internal links?

Dori answer: If this page is about on-page/on-site factors, then I don’t touch it. But I do stress geting external links TO interal pages and let it rip on through the site. No official rule of thumb, but the more the better.

(9) What’s a successful link development strategy many overlook or dismiss?

Getting links from low pr sites or sites NOT in Google’s index and also using the URL as a keyword.

(10) What have you been most WRONG about over the course of your link building/SEO career?

For a long time I thought links had to come from authority sites with good PR to rank for mid-range keywords, and have found out over the last year or two that that is not the case. =:0

And that links had to come from themed sites with original content. What baloney that is!

The guys over at Out Spoken Media put out a new back linking interview with SEO professionals. And NO I didn’t get asked, (go figure) but here is how I answered the questions before reading their answers. I am only going to post a couple at a time so yall can digest.

And sow reading what main stream seo’ers think, (you can read the whole linking interview) I’m glad I rely on testing and experience as I just don’t agree with a lot of what they say. But there are some good tidbits that left me going, hmmm interesting. I can see some testing coming down the pike.

Anyway, here are my answers to three of the questions. More coming later.

1) What are a few emerging link tactics that you’ve seen in the past 12 months providing tremendous value to sites/pages? Can you give a specific example or two?

Dori’s Answer: I am seeing rankings for sites that have what would be perceived as “worthless” links coming into them. When I say worthless, I mean, sites that are NOT indexed or only have a Page Rank of 0. I wouldn’t of believed if I didn’t see it for myself on a friends site who is competing on a mega keyword. This got me to start doing more competitive analysis to see what was really linking to page one sites, and more times then now, 30-40% of all incoming links are from sites that are NOT in Google’s index! So with a swamp of these with PR0-1 set you up pretty nicely to score with a couple of quality links from PR3 and above.

2) What are the criteria for the “perfect link”?

Dori’s Answer: Any link does better if coming from within a text block. Cream is getting them from high pr .edu or .gov sites and what would make it perfect is if it was the only out going link on the page But heck, I would be happy if it had less then 10 other outgoing links. Oh and the obviously.. keyword anchor or link text.

3) How do you go about creating a link marketing plan that will A:) Get tangible search results in a 6 to 12 month period and B:) Create sustainability for the website you are creating the plan for (i.e. keeping the links clean and adding links with long term value)

Dori’s Answer: First, I am ALL about off page optimization so that is what I am going to talk about and assume the on page optimization is good and with keyword title tags. Second, I have to look at the clients site and find out what thier goals are.

This is A huge factor when I start a campaign because some clients will want to hit 1000s long tail and someone else will want 1 or 2 humdingers! So campaign tactics will variy but basically I always like to start getting URL keywords going to their site using my SeoNitro Network of low grade pr sites and a directory submission service. (A URL keyword is using your domain name in the link text. ie, domainname.com, www.domainname.com etc.)

Once I determine the goals we start linking from within SeoNitro Network. I normally get movement in 7 to 10 days. The first set of numbers tells me how much or how little it is going to take to get their keywords ranked so once that happens we can adjust to accomodate. In most cases, I like to start light and then increase while watching for over optimization. (symptom of this is the site will drop into the hundreds, cure for this is pull original keyword linking and increase URL keyword linking until site returns to past ranking)

I normally get I think what you consider “tangible” results in a campaign in 2-3 months. It just depends on keywords and clients current ranking and site.

Once we get where we want to, for the tough keywords, it is all about keeping and defending that ranking so our the posting from the SeoNitro Link Network continues or increases to maintain. But with longer tail keywords I can lighten up on and work on the clients next 1000.

With mid-range keywords I typically like to go after 5-10 at a time, nail those and then move on. Once we do enough of the mid-range, often we naturally rise for the MONSTER keyword of the market which is always exciting.

I have to be the first to tell you. Google gave us a magnificent gift, I suspect within the past 48-72 hours but I am not sure exactly when.

Look at the backend of the google webmaster tool at any of your registered sites.

They are now giving us actual Queries, Clickthru rates and %. And….

They are also telling us about clickthru rates when our sites are in different positions in the SERPS.

Wow, in just minutes, I have dispelled some long standing 6 year old rumors with this new information.

You may already know that Position 6-7 in the PPC was being advocated as best positions to buy for those wishing to stretch their dollar. The truth is that position number 1 is the best to buy if u have the big bucks but 6-7 is best if ur stretching ad dollars.

Well, now I can see that on a few of my keywords, I am also getting 300% more clickthru’s on position 6-7 - BUT WE ARE TALKING about Natural Search now and nOT PPC.

Don’t look if you are in a hurry, cause this new analytical information will surely cause you to lose an extra hour or so skimming from site to site.

I am assuming that you use the google webmaster tool for your real money sites.

Warm regards

I know it has been a LOOOONG time since I posted. But, that doesn’t mean I have been still. On the contrary, I have been busier then I have ever been! =:0

In fact, in the next couple of weeks you will being hearing a lot from me and hopefully about me.. well, my project anyway lol.. Traffic Rockstars. It started out as a list building strategy and then turned into an full blown virtual trade show.

We found some guys working on some kick ass technology that I think you will agree, may change the way we do seminars and webinars, but that is another story. lol

Right now I got a 7StepSEO Quick-Start Guide that I wrote for Brad Callan’s customers and never sent it out to my own list! Shame on me! But like I said, I have been so focused on Traffic Rockstars I haven’t even look sideways.

Here is the download, Enjoy.

Once you figure out what it takes to get to the first page you can make a plan to get there. I am doing a series of videos on how to study your competition (seo wise) for my upcoming Home Study course.

This first part is using the tool spydermate.com which gives each site a ranking score based on backlinks, page rank, alexa, compete, age and domain expiration. Now we know there are many more factors in ranking a page, but this gives us barometer to measure by.

Sypdermate.com also creates a really cool graph to easily see where improvement can be made. In this video, I take two keywords, a monster one, “Weight Loss” and a less competitive niche keyword, “Organic Olive Oil” that I am actually interested in.

I then analyzed the sites on page one and then a couple on page 3 and put them all in a spreadsheet to take a quick snapshot of the competition. Enjoy!

The next part in this series will study the back links of these sites to get a better understanding of why they are rank where they do and what we would need to do to get there.

About a week or so ago, a member of my last SEO Intensive Class sent this a PDF report on Page Rank to the group.
